Scared of the Dark?

When Sleep Isn’t Peaceful

When I was ten years old, I started having the same recurring nightmare at least once a month. In my dream I was in our living room, standing in front of my mirror with my dad. I was pulling at clumps of his hair which were coming out in my hand. I remember that in the dream I knew this meant something very, very bad, although at that point I had no experience of cancer. Seven years later, as I stood in front of a mirror with a father who’d just begun chemotherapy, I realised the recurring dream had come true. We had moved house since I was younger, so the room wasn’t exactly the same; but my actions were identical—as was the unforgettable feeling.

In hindsight, this was not the only premonition (for want of a better word) that I had as a child. I would dream vividly, often telling my mum that my head was ‘too full of thoughts’ or ‘my dreams are making me tired.’ Sometimes I would see a scene, sometimes I’d just remember a feeling. Only later, would I link it to an event when it actually happened.

As an adult, these kind of dreams have continued. Last year, my best friend in Sydney had an accident at 2am. She was coming home from a night out, lost her keys and fell while trying to climb in her bathroom window. She laid for hours in the cold with a broken leg and ribs, before someone heard her calling out for help. At the time I was living in a different city, but that same night, over 200km away, I had a dream that I was standing in her apartment searching for her, feeling overwhelmed with panic. When I woke up, I felt shaken. Less than ten minutes later she called me from the hospital, just before she was taken into surgery.

For some people, dreams like this might seem terrifying. Other people might be sceptical and doubt whether humans have the ability to see the future in their dreams. But you’ve probably all experienced a night where reality infiltrates your dreams and affects what you see, do and feel in that state of consciousness: a person who keeps popping up in your dreams, even though you haven’t seen them in years; a feeling of fear, loss, anxiety, love, joy or happiness that stays with you all day, even after you’ve woken up.

Have you ever slept on a question and woken up with the answer?

Have you ever gone to sleep feeling anxious and woken up feeling joyful?

Have you ever woken from a dream still feeling the touch of someone who was in it?

Has a dream changed your view of a person or situation? Should you let it?
